Venus of the Sea Water

Handcrafted sterling silver ring set with a 20 mm × 12 mm fantasy precision-cut aquamarine. Size 9.

Named for Venus in her oceanic aspect, this one-of-a-kind ring is set with a large fantasy precision-cut aquamarine (20mm x 12mm). It is cut with concave prisms whose reflections resemble rippling seawater, fitting for a gemstone whose name comes from the Latin aqua maris, meaning “water of the sea.” I first hand carved this ring in jeweller’s wax, shaping organic seaweed-like tendrils that rise and curl as though grown from the ocean floor to hold fast the giant gem treasure. That original wax carving was then cast in solid sterling silver, finished with an antique patina, and set with the aquamarine, preserving the sculptural movement of the hand-worked form.

Aquamarine belongs to the beryl family, a stone associated with Venus in traditional lapidary and astrological texts, including Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy, where beryl is counted among the gemstones belonging to her sphere. In lapidary tradition it was also carried as a protective stone for sea travel, believed to guard against shipwreck and drowning.

All gemstones are natural, earth-grown unless otherwise indicated, and individually hand-selected by me.
